Some of the greatest innovations and computer toys can be found at the Comdex trade show in Las Vegas. Live On Line NEWS co-host, Barry Diamond gives you a tour of some of the highlights of Comdex 2000. His favorites from the show are pictured below.

One of the hottest advances in display technology are plasma displays. Plasma cells are excited by an electrical charge producing a high-resolution picture for computers and video. The largest screen previously available was a 42" diagonal screen that had a depth of about 5". Sanyo had a prototype of a 62" plasma screen on display.

He's cute. He's cuddly. He chases a pink ball and he knows when you touch him. He's AIBO, Sony's digital pet. He has sensors throughout his body to detect your touch and a video camera in his nose so he can see you and his favorite toy. If he falls, he can stand up again. He has a learning personality and will follow you around if he likes you. You don't even have to walk him!

Soon your computer will go everywhere you do. Full size computer tablets are making the scene. You will have a stand, keyboard and mouse for when you are home. When you travel, just pick up the tablet and go. Functions can be accessed through a touch screen interface. This one is being produced by Innolabs.

Video game fanatics, your world has just taken a giant leap forward. BestSoft was showing Virtual Ring, a video game one-on-one battle simulation that goes a step further than Double Dragon. A video projector shows the game on a screen or wall, and the players stand in a square area, surrounded by sensors that pick up their movements. Your kicks and punches are registered by the computer and translated onto the animated characters on the screen.

Another robot making the scene was iRobot. It climbs stairs, has a video camera and extendable neck to look over things, you can speak through it and, best of all, you can control it remotely from anywhere in the world over the Internet. A great way to keep an eye on things when you are away.
